Mini-game #9 struggles! A new Racecar! Mini-game #10!
about 3 years ago – Wed, Mar 10, 2021 at 03:42:01 AM

Hello Racers!

Mini-game #9 was more difficult than the previous ones: we were fully aware you would not be able to replicate the impressive scores in the 15+ range you got used to in the previous iterations, but you are much more familiar with the rules of the game now, and we wanted to test your skills. You didn't disappoint! The best results we received were all worth 12 points, let's take a look at a couple of interesting ones.

Andrea used the ability of the Grim Thresher on the very first movement, followed by a forward 2. Then, an impressive Jump 4 thanks to the Hacked Power card turning the Decrease command into an Increase, followed by the "real" Increase and the Jump. After that, 2 diagonal to the left, 1 forward, and 2 diagonal to the right to end on column 12. Nice!

Jules took a different approach to achieve a similar result, starting with a Jump straight away to fly over the early toy obstacle, then 2 forward and 1 forward (using the Grim Thresher's ability to ignore damage). After that, 2 diagonal to the left, then to the right, then a Decrease-turned-Increase on a 1 diagonal and a Missile command to land on the water split in column 12.

We couldn't find a way to go beyond 12 ourselves, so... well done to Andrea, Jules, and the other backers who achieved the same score! The community submitted just a few points more than the required 200, unlocking the Hacker and the Tool Box Power cards!

For mini-game #10 we will once more test your skills with Power cards! This time, you have just 1 controller and 1 racecar (the Dogtor), and you will have to choose 1 Power card out of 3! Your goal is to find which Power card allows you to move the most spaces forward with the commands available!

Remember: "Hacked" allows you to turn the Decrease command into an Increase; "Air Bags" lets you ignore the first collision of the round; finally, "Fan" gives +1 to each movement command in the 3rd row of your controller (from the 5th to the 8th command of your sequence).

When you think you have the correct answer, post a comment below this update (not on the main campaign page) simply stating which option you choose: A, B, or C! The stretch goal that you will unlock by solving this mini-game is a brand new Racecar... the Monster Hunter!

This heroic Barbarian riding a "dragon kart" is on a quest for glory (yes, even during a race!) and it comes with several "Monster tokens". At the start of the game, you need to place 1 of these tokens on each Racetrack board. Each token shows a special bonus (like "3 forward" or "Recharge 1") that only the Monster Hunter can collect and unlock by driving over them! A quest for glory with racing bonuses! We will unlock the Monster Hunter if we'll see at least 30 correct answers in the comments below!

That's it for today's update... see you tomorrow!

Until next time!

Sincerely,

the Horrible team

Lots of mini-game solutions! A new stretch goal! Mini-game #9!
about 3 years ago – Tue, Mar 09, 2021 at 12:33:21 AM

Hello Racers,

a new week starts! We have a lots of things to go through today, so let's get this update started without further ado! Here are the solutions to mini-game #7 that we promised you on saturday:

Option A was the winning choice, and it made the most of the ability of the Sonic Fish with those enhanced diagonal 1 movements towards the end!

Option B was close, but the collision towards the end made it fall just short of option A.

Option C was not a bad one either, ending just 2 spaces behind option B and 3 spaces behind option A... but it quite hilariously ends with a final crash causing the Time Machine to lose its 3rd Battery in a single round! The next 3 commands in the following round will need to be spent to recover 3 Batteries.

And now let's see in detail the 3 options you had available for mini-game #8!

Option A has a few shortcomings, but it obtains a very good result overall. It starts with a 1 forward, followed by a 2 diagonal reduced to 1 by the carpet and a 1 backwards... but after that comes a great recover. 2 diagonal, jump, double increase (thanks to the ability of the Die Liner) bringing the following turbo to a whopping 5 spaces, and ending with a final diagonal 1. Quite neat, despite the sloppy start.

Now let's see how those same commands play out with a different car in option B. The Brick Gang has a much better start, but it all goes wrong when it lands on a carpet which changes the "1 backward" command to a "2 backward". It then also crashes into the toothbrush, tries to recover with the increased turbo, but ends with another crash against the shampoo.

With option C... well, we just wanted to have a bit of fun (and no, we have nothing against the Time Machine, if anyone was wondering 😜). The very same commands we used for the other two options are just... awful, when applied to this car! Forward 1, diagonal 2 to the left and crash (2 batteries left), backwards 1 and crash (1 battery left), then again diagonal 1 to the left, crash, and third battery lost. The 3 following commands are lost to recover, then the Time Machine restart with a diagonal 1 to the right... and then goes back in time to re-apply the 1 forward command and crash once again. 4 batteries lost in a single round!

You very easily identified option A as the winning one, and we received just enough correct answers to unlock the additional Finish Line layout! This means that it's time to reveal our next stretch goal... another set of 2 additional Power cards!

Both these Power cards must be activated before you start the Programming phase. The Tool Box allows you to move 3 spaces forward after you perform a Recharge command (imagine that used in combo with the Time Machine...) while the Hacked Power card allows you to turn your Decrease command into another Increase command (this would play particularly well with the Die Liner)!

To unlock these cards, you'll have to use one in our next mini-game! Mini-game #9 is once again of the "social challenge" kind. Like the previous ones, there are no pre-compiled controllers: you must use our virtual controller to program the movements of your car and race it as far as you can! You are racing with the Grim Thresher, you only have 1 battery, and this is the track you'll have to deal with:

The Grim Thresher is one of the Racecars included in the core box. Whenever you move 1 space forward (only forward, not diagonally) you can ignore any damage. This will for sure come in handy since you only have 1 battery! You'll also have the chance to turn a Decrease command into an Increase command with the Hacked Power card.

You have 120 seconds to program the movements of your car for this puzzle. When you are done, take a picture (or screenshot) of your virtual puzzle controller, then submit your answer with this form making sure to specify the number of the column that you were able to reach. This number will also be your "personal score" (reaching column #10 --> 10 points). We will unlock the two additional Power cards if you will collectively obtain at least 200 points in total as a community (each person can only submit 1 score)!

Until next time!

Weekend update! Mini-game #7 results + mini-game #8!
about 3 years ago – Sat, Mar 06, 2021 at 02:07:30 AM

Hello Racers,

as you know at this point, we usually take a bit of rest during weekends, so this will be another shorter update. We'll also once again take a break tomorrow, but we'll make still sure to keep you entertained during the weekend!

First of all, an update on mini-game #6: we'll give a break to our poor graphic artist and we'll only post the detailed analysis of the 3 options available on monday, but we can already announce that most of you guessed that the answer to the puzzle was option A and that we received enough correct answers to unlock the Bombs and Cola Missile Power cards!

And our next stretch goal is... an alternative Finish Line layout!

With a huge obstacle in the middle, this new layout will force you to carefully think about the commands you perform after crossing the finish line, if you want to be sure to come out on top of your competition!

To unlock this stretch goal, you''ll have to solve our next mini-game. It will be similar to the last one: you have just 1 controller and you have 3 racecars to choose from, each with its own ability and starting from a different space of the track! Your goal is to find which racecar allows you to move the most spaces forward with the commands available!

Remember: the Die Liner (A, purple car on top) doubles the effect of the Increase command (+2 instead of +1); the Brick Gang (B, red car in the middle) always moves exactly 2 spaces when it starts on a Carpet; finally, the Time Machine (C, grey car at the bottom) must re-apply its first command of the round at the end of the regular sequence of 8 commands.

When you think you have the correct answer, post a comment below this update (not on the main campaign page) simply stating which option you choose: A, B, or C! We will unlock the alternative Finish Line layout if we'll see at least 30 correct answers!

That's it for today's update! As we said at the beginning, we'll take a break tomorrow. Have another restful weekend, racers! See you on monday!

Until next time!

Bird Racer unlocked! More Power cards coming! Mini-game #7!
about 3 years ago – Sat, Mar 06, 2021 at 12:20:54 AM

Hello Racers!

Yesterday's mini-game was slightly more difficult, and we also received less controller submission than last time... but you still managed to submit just a bit more than the required 300 points needed to unlock the Bird Racer! This additional Racecar will now be added to the core game.

This time, the best individual result achieved by the community was 16 points! Here are a couple of highlights chosen among the backers who managed to achieve this impressive distance:

Mario started with an Increased 2 Forward command (getting the Slippery token), then dodged the Carpet, jumped over the Pig toy to land on the Crayon Booster before sprinting over another Carpet with the "Super Turbo" command of the Turbo Bot, before applying two well placed inverted diagonal movement commands and safely landing on column 16. Well done!

Andrea took a slightly different approach, using more or less the same commands but in a different order (with a spectacular twist). First a 2 Forward (getting the Slippery token), then an immediate use of the "Super Turbo" to get beyond the Carpet without negative effects, a turn right (with an inverted 1 diagonal left command) to avoid an obstacle... and then an incredible "Jump +2" (thanks to the combined effects of the Crayon Booster and the Increase command) to fly over the second Carpet! The turn is concluded with 2 well placed diagonal movements, just like Mario's.

With 1 more stretch goal down, here comes another! Today we'll be trying a new take on the "classic" puzzle mini-game with A-B-C options... to unlock 2 additional Power cards!

The Bombs allows you to place 1 explosive obstacle (similar to the Sprintarr racecar included with the Adventure Crew Expansion). Any racecar that hits the Bomb will take 2 damage instead of 1.

The Cola Missile will send spiked, blue shivers down the spine of any player familiar with a certain japanese karting game featuring a mustached plumber from Italy. This vicious item allows you to directly deal 1 damage to the racecar currently racing in first position.

Today's mini-game is an interesting one: you have just 1 controller, this time... but you have 3 racecars to choose from, each with its own ability and starting from a different space of the track! Your goal is to find which racecar allows you to move the most spaces forward with the commands on that one controller!

Remember: the Sonic Fish (A, blue car on top) gets +1 to each diagonal movement command when it is in Slippery mode; the Brick Gang (B, red car in the middle) always moves exactly 2 spaces when it starts on a Carpet; finally, the Time Machine (C, grey car at the bottom) must re-apply its first command of the round at the end of the regular sequence of 8 commands.

When you think you have the correct answer, post a comment below this update (not on the main campaign page) simply stating which controller you choose: A, B, or C! We will unlock the Bombs and the Cola Missile Power cards if we'll see at least 30 correct answers!

Until next time!

Fan and Jackbox Power cards unlocked! A new racecar! Mini-game#6!
about 3 years ago – Thu, Mar 04, 2021 at 08:17:20 PM

Hello Racers!

We're happy to announce that we received way more correct answers to our previous mini-game than required... 2 additional Power cards, the Fan and the Jackbox, have been unlocked!

As is tradition at this point, before revealing our next stretch goal (and mini-game), let's we would like to analyze in detail the three options available during our previous mini-game.

Option A starts with a turn to the right, then a boost forward (3 spaces, taking advantage of the Crayon Booster). After a second (and decreased) turn to the right, it goes forward 1 space, then jumps over the toy, turns left, and performs a turbo command, ending right below the bird puppet.

Option B uses a turbo immediately, instead, then turns left, makes a couple of moves on the carpet, then takes another left and gets slippery just before taking an inverted and Sonic Fish-enhanced movement to the left... right into the wall, taking a damage. The turn is concluded with an Increased 2 Forward command that brings the racecar to the same column as option A.

Option C takes a more straighforward approach early on: turn right to get to the Crayon Booster, then full speed forward until it reaches the water split, getting the Slippery token, and performing 2 well-placed diagonal movements enhanced by the ability of the Sonic Fish. Even with a final backwards command, it still ends 2 spaces ahead of both A and B.

It was a close race, but the best option was option C! And now, it's time to reveal our next stretch goal... another additional Racecar!

The Bird Racer allows you to freely move you car sideways at the end of your turn, before spending your leftover Energy Shield tokens to move forward. This will increase your chances of maximising their boosting effect, without crashing into obstacles or other cars!

The mini-game you'll have to beat to unlock it is of the "social  challenge" kind. Like the previous one, there are no pre-compiled controllers: you must use our virtual controller to program the movements of your car and race it as far as you can! You are racing with the Turbo Bot, you only have 2 batteries, and this is the track you'll have to deal with:

You have 120 seconds to program the movements of your car for this puzzle. When you are done, take a picture (or screenshot) of your virtual puzzle controller, then submit your answer with this form making sure to specify the number of the column that you were able to reach. This number will also be your "personal score" (reaching column #10 --> 10 points). We will unlock the Bird-Racer if you will collectively obtain at least 300 points in total as a community (each person can only submit 1 score)!

Until next time!

the Horrible Team
